From mitigating the effects of heat in our neighborhoods to helping us live happier, healthier lives, the benefits of the green space around us are vast - and well documented. The TurfMutt Foundation keeps track of the latest global research about green space benefits in the International Backyarding Fact Book.

Here are some highlights from the most recent studies:

  • Children who play outdoors frequently between the ages of two and four are significantly more likely to maintain low levels of emotional and behavioral difficulties through middle childhood.
  • Listening to birdsong in green space can reduce stress, improve mood and support better mental health in just 10 minutes.
  • Higher exposure to residential green space is associated with a lower risk for neurodegenerative diseases among middle-aged and older adults, according to a study that analyzed 1.7 million individuals.
  • Living near a moderate amount of green space may reduce the risk of developing ALS, according to a study from Italy.
  • An Israeli-led study finds that living near green spaces can reduce long-term stress during pregnancy.
